We are pleased to announce that we are now able to offer an innovative fire retardant timber treatment process called Firestop, following our successful accreditation to IS09001 in December 2010. We are the only facility to offer Firestop throughout the UK.
Managing Director of WJ Components, Mark Eggleston, takes up the story:
“Wood is becoming an increasingly popular material in the construction sector, as it is natural, sustainable and has a low carbon footprint. With this popularity comes an increased requirement for high quality fire retardant timber solutions. Firestop has been specially developed for vacuum pressure treatment to improve the performance of timber when exposed to fire. It is one of the best solutions on the market and we are delighted to be one of only a few facilities to provide a fire retardant timber treatment in the whole country.”
Alexandra Dock is one of the UK’s main timber import hubs and an ideal location for our treatment facility. Wood is immediately treated as soon as it comes into the dock in one of our two high pressure vacuum treatment tanks or our low pressure vessels. The timber is then delivered direct to the customer without having to make any additional journeys for treatment – which reduces its carbon footprint and delivery miles even further.
Mark continues: “In the past, there have not been many facilities that offer a fire retardant timber treatment process in the UK. This has resulted in extended lead times for fire retardant timber due to the limited capacity in the market. Hopefully, the availability of Firestop from WJ will help to develop a new market for the company and offer specifiers of fire retardant timbers more choice.
“Timber treatment is just one service that WJ Components offers. We are well-known for supplying high volume roof trusses to the local and national holiday home and caravan market. We also supply easi-joists to the construction industry, which is an innovative flooring joist system.”
Timber treated with Firestop is suitable for interior and exterior applications and the most typical uses include internal wall and ceiling linings, external claddings, roof constructions, transportation, wooden scaffolding and pallets for the chemical industry. It controls ignition of fire, impedes flame spread across the wood surface and lowers the heat release from the wood-based substrate.
Firestop is produced by Dr Wolman, a leading player in wood protection which is owned by BASF, the world’s largest chemical company. Wolman is based in Germany and produces some of the most advanced timber treatments in Europe.
The fire retardant efficiency of Firestop meets the requirements of BS EN 15301:1 class B & C. WJ Components Ltd are only the second company to be registered with the WPA (Wood Protection Association) as an accredited treater for flame retardant timbers.
