For the third year running, WJ Group has been a key sponsor to the business idea pitching competition that Hull Business School runs for its students annually. The prize? A £500 cheque from the sponsors to invest in developing the winning idea.
A hand-picked judging panel of nine people, including WJ Group MD, Mark Eggleston, perform a slightly more amenable Dragon’s Den style assessment of each idea presented to them. The key factors scored include: the business idea and market research undertaken, the presentation, the financial plan and an assessment of the innovative potential of the opportunity.
The winner for 2017 was Don Churro. The business idea is to sell Coffee and Churro’s, which are South American patisseries. The prize money is to be used to further promote the idea and hopefully win some investment to support a launch. Closely following in second place was Jump Anime – a business idea to sell a niche brand of cartoon merchandise.
Comments Mark Eggleston: “As a Hull based business, we’re very keen to support Hull University in its work when we can. Anything that Hull businesses can do in conjunction with the University to encourage graduates to stay in the area and work for locally based companies, or to set up their own enterprise locally has to be encouraged.”
